I've been around the sun enough times to know there is no easy way to get through this life. Something a mentor of mine told me once was, "living a healthy lifestyle is hard. Living unhealthy is hard. Choose your hard." In 2012, at 32 years old I finally decided to choose health and even though I have to still make this choice every day, it's a choice I make easily after seeing all the unhealthy habits I could walk away from for good.
Prior to 2012 I had been going faster and faster through the yo-yo cycles of health and sickness my whole adult life. I knew how to lose weight, but I had no understanding of what a healthy mindset was or how to maintain good habits long term. I had been on medication for depression and anxiety for years and didn't have any hope that I could create a peaceful life on my own. The faster I lost weight, the faster it came back on. My erratic eating habits had escalated into a very serious binge-eating habit. I was shutting myself off more and more from friends and family and avoided social events or the messages from friends and family wanting to connect on my phone. I disliked myself immensely and was in the mindset of "I guess this is just who I am. Lots of people are unhealthy. I'm just one of those people."
When I was finally ready to do things differently, I reached out to a private health coach for the first time and submitted to a bigger transformation process that not only included help with my nutrition, but weekly accountability, education, mental work, and community. Once I stopped trying to solve just the outcome of my bad habits (my weight) and focused more on the causes of them (unhealthy lifestyle, negative mindset and no support) that's when real change finally happened. Not only did I drop 40lb that year, but I was able to get off the medications I'd been on for 7 years, develop a strong exercise habit, help my family get healthy as well and even start helping other people through my healthy ripple effects.
I went from feeling like I had nothing to offer the world to feeling like I might actually be able to affect people for the better. This one mindset shift alone has been the biggest benefit to me of personally committing to healthy habits.
I opened my private coaching business in July 2012 and have worked with over 1,000 people since then.
